exploring nostalgia: a creative investigation.

exploring nostalgia was hosted by Allenheads Contemporary Arts, an organisation based in a remote rural village in Northumberland.  Co-ordinated by Hannah Marsden working closely with two artists in residence Claire Rowlands and Andrew Wilson, the programme included open studio events, live performances, workshops, film screenings, and ongoing discussion and writing.  The project culminated in an exhibition event held at ACAshop and the Old School House in June 2009.  Funded by the National Lottery through Awards for All, the programme has an emphasis on community interaction and involvement.

Some thoughts about nostalgia…

Nostalgia has existed throughout history. It holds a wide significance today, manifesting in contemporary patterns of economics, politics, media, popular culture, religion, art and science.

Nostalgia is an ambiguous concept with boundaries and effects that are hard to pin down.    Nostalgia is a personal impulse drawing from individual memory and desire.  Nostalgia is collectively induced, is manipulative, and is recycled.  Nostalgia strengthens bonds with our shared history and perpetuates social identities.  Nostalgia encourages false memories that destabilise understandings of history and reality.  Nostalgia is comforting and healing.  Nostalgia is a desire without the possibility of fulfilment.  Nostalgia produces enjoyment and lifts the spirit.  Nostalgia is a product of loss and displacement.  Nostalgia is at once a representation and a misrepresentation.  Nostalgia is a romance with fantasy.
